America in Bloom Awards Westfield a Four Bloom Rating
Doc_40128_medium
Westfield recently competed for the first time in the national America in Bloom competition and was recognized at the eighth annual America in Bloom (AIB) Symposium and Awards Program on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Westfield was the only town in the state of New Jersey to compete in the 2009 competition.

AIB is a national campaign and contest that promotes enhancing communities through beautification. In the friendly competition, communities are matched by population and evaluated on their efforts related to floral displays, urban forestry, landscaped areas, turf and groundcover, tidiness, environmental awareness, heritage conservation, and community involvement. Judges visited Westfield in early July.

Among 25 towns in the United States, Westfield was one of three finalists in two of the eight criteria: Floral Displays and Urban Forestry with the winning towns being Greendale, Indiana and Milwaukee, Wisconsin respectively. Westfield also received a four-bloom rating out of a possible five-bloom rating in recognition of its floral displays. Westfield followed second in the population category with Collierville, Tennessee winning the top prize in the 20,001 to 50,000 population category. In addition, Westfield?s efforts were mentioned many times in a new edition of America in Bloom's Best Ideas book published in September 2009.

'Westfield in Bloom' was the name of the local program during the America in Bloom competition held during the spring and summer. Through this effort co-lead by Sherry Cronin, Executive Director, Downtown Westfield Corporation and Dave Williams of Williams Nursery, many town departments, organizations, businesses and residents joined the committee and continue to be part of an ongoing effort. A WestfieldinBloom.com blog was created by Dave Williams to garner support for the Westfield in Bloom program.

"We were pleased to receive this recognition. America in Bloom officials and judges said that Westfield scored extremely well especially for a first year community." stated Sherry Cronin. Dave Williams added "We are looking forward to sharing the detailed report and judge's recommendations with the Town and committee and to garner support to compete again next year." Westfield received a total of 859 points of the possible 1000 points across the eight criteria.

America in Bloom is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization encouraging nationwide beautification programs, personal and community involvement, educational programs and the challenge of a friendly competition among participating communities across the country. To date, more than 170 communities in 38 states have participated in the AIB program.

South Avenue Streetscape Construction to Begin August 24, 2009
Work is expected to begin on or about August 24, 2009 on an important phase of the Downtown Improvement Plan. The South Avenue Streescape project includes curb, sidewalk, landscaping and new decorative lighting from Westfield Avenue to Central Avenue. The historic light poles will be provided and installed by PSE&G after the conclusion of the work. In addition, existing parking meters will be removed and replaced with parking pay stations with numbered parking spaces, providing additional parking opportunities along South Ave. The bus stop will be relocated on South Avenue to the Northern corner of Boulevard.

Work is expected to start on the South Ave. train station lot side first. As work moves to the other side of South Avenue, parking and sidewalk will be disrupted during the time that each building front is being worked on. Plywood platforms with carpeted entrances will be used to allow access to each storefront and driveways will be accommodated for access.

It is antipated that the work will be completed within 6 to 8 weeks. In the interim, the Town of Westfield appreciates your patience and understanding. To keep informed about this project, register for the e-alert program at the town's web site, www.westfieldnj.gov, or visit the Downtown Westfield Corporation's website at www.westfieldtoday.com.

The Farmhouse Store Expands to 221 E. Broad Street in Downtown Westfield
Doc_46295_medium
Westfield, NJ - On Saturday, August 8, 2009, the Farmhouse Store opened its doors to its new expanded location on E. Broad Street near the intersection of Central Avenue. Noted for its unique selection of handcrafted artisan gifts, pottery, glass, wood, textiles, metal, paper, home decor, and jewelry, the Farmhouse Store had outgrown its home for the last three years coincidentally also at the address number of 221 on North Avenue E. next to Jay's Cycle Center.

Having developed a loyal customer base and following, owners and life partners, Ed Menapace and Bill Curtis are very excited to expand--especially in the current economy. According to Ed Menapace "The Farmhouse Store is proud to have over 10,000 customers developed in the last three years since originally opening. We knew when we started that we were bringing special products to the marketplace. We appreciate our customers loyalty and friendships we have cultivated in the community". Naming itself 'Like no other store in Westfield', the Farmhouse Store offers high-quality one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor items including furniture. According to Bill Curtis, "Our barnwood collection furniture includes some of our best selling items--they are significantly less expensive than what you could find at an unnamed big-box retailer and are handcrafted using antique barn boards reclaimed from 100-200 year old barns and mills."

The Farmhouse Store, conveniently located at 221 E. Broad Street is open Monday - Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Parking is available on-street or in the rear municipal parking lot (Parking is always free on Sundays and after 7 pm each evening). Visit www.thefarmhousestore.com for more exciting information about The Farmhouse Store.

Westfield Welcomes Blvd Bistro
Doc_46256_medium
by Millicent K. Brody

It's not often that a new Bistro with exciting fare and reasonable pricing arrives in your very own town, but proprietor William Perillo (just call me Bill), had the vision to create a restaurant in what was once a corner Business Machine shop.

"I knew Westfield was a restaurant destination. I also know their residents appreciate fine food and service. I do believe you'll find it all at Blvd Bistro," he said.

"When dining out, I like to know I'm going to be fed the finest, freshest food," he adds. "Our meat, seafood, and vegetables are delivered fresh daily. Our pastas and desserts are prepared in house. At Blvd Bistro, you can expect local warmth with Soho in Manhattan flair."

For starters, try the Mozzarella Tre, homemade mozzarella with roasted peppers and tomato, insalata frutti di Mari, shrimp, scungilli, and calamari with garlic, olive oil, lemon and fresh herbs, or Sicilian sliders topped with housemade mozzarella and a fra diavolo sauce. Guests seemed to really enjoy the grilled polenta topped with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a tomato basil sauce, and calamari sauteed with black olives and capers in a red, white, or brandy sauce.

Salads are prepared with care. Refreshing, organic greens are topped with apples, pecans and goat cheese, while funghi, or wild mushroom soup is blended with fresh herbs.

Of course the menu includes a host of pasta dishes prepared in all of your favorite ways. You?re also able to order Shrimp scampi, grilled salmon and grilled shrimp and calamari. Like all other Italian restaurants, chicken is served Balsamico, Francese, Marsala, Milanese, Parmigiano and PIccata. Ditto for your favorite veal dishes.

Desserts range from a creamy tiramisu, to Italian cheese cake, tartuffo and lemon sorbet. Guests are invited to bring their own wine. The staff offers bottled or sparkling water. With this gorgeous warm weather, you'll enjoy dining outdoors on really comfortable, upholstered furniture....or head indoors and enjoy the bustling ambiance.

Westfield Prepares For America in Bloom Judges
Doc_46223_medium
Westfield, NJ - Downtown Westfield Corporation and Williams Nursery of Westfield have applied for Westfield to be considered for the 2009 "America in Bloom" award. Westfield is among 23 towns nationwide to compete and is one of only four other towns in our population category being judged. These towns include: Collierville, Tennessee, Junction City, Kansas, and Michigan City, Indiana. Westfield has the distinction of being the only town in the state of NJ to participate in the 2009 competition.

Katy Moss Warner and Patrick Bones, volunteer judges for America in Bloom, will be visiting Westfield on July 2 and 3 to view the lush landscaping around businesses, homes and landmarks within the town and judging Westfield on eight criteria: tidiness, environmental, community involvement, heritage, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral display, and turf and ground cover areas. Final results of the judging will be revealed in October in Hersey PA at the national symposium.

Originally modeled after Canada's Communities in Bloom program, America in Bloom has encouraged over 150 towns across America to revamp their recreation and residential areas since its initiation in 2001. In doing so, visitors and residences of the participating towns have seen a vast improvement of overall quality of life and pride within their communities.

The Downtown Westfield Corporation and Williams Nursery, working in conjunction with the Town of Westfield and its residents and businesses are thrilled to be apart of this unique contest that evokes community pride.

For local information about Westfield's involvement or to participate by submitting stories and photos of your Westfield residence, businesses or outdoor environment contact Sherry Cronin at the DWC or Dave Williams at Williams Nursery at info@westfieldinbloom.com. Westfield in Bloom: Fresh Basil, Tomatoes and More
Doc_46218_medium
by Millicent K. Brody

No matter the size, if you have a sunny patch of land somewhere near your Westfield residence or place of business, (even if its a windowsill, patio, terrace, deck), cheer yourself up, and grow yourself a few tomato and basil plants. Never mind that there's not a spot of dirt anywhere...grow your plants in pots. "Tomatoes can grow anywhere there is a concentration of sun," says David Williams a partner in Williams Nursery in Westfield, and President Elect of Gardens of America, based in Georgia. As a Gardner for 45 of his 47 years, Williams brags that the sale of his tomato plants paid for his college education. He also suggests using fertilizer geared only for vegetables.

"You'll recognize the brand," he continues. "Fertilize your vegetable plants every 3 or 4 weeks. Remember, the average tomato plant growing in direct sunlight is able to yield about 50 tomatoes."

I might agree with those statistics, and the fact that tomatoes can grow anywhere...except they're not able to grow in the fresh soil I put down each year at our house. Alongside our front steps is what some would call a window box. Given the right environment, it could easily produce a bumper crop of tomatoes, peppers, and basil. The problem is, before any of these wondrous plants reach fruition, they became smorgasbord for our resident bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and skunks.

That is why I've started a porch garden. "To grow tomatoes outdoors, you'll need a pot with circumference of at least 12 inches," continues Williams. "The bigger the pot, the more tomatoes you're apt to yield. I'd also suggest not using soil that is already in the ground. Get yourselves a couple of bags of potting soil, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Once the plants start growing, I?m accustomed to picking a fresh cucumber or zucchini about every two days."

If you're growing tomatoes and basil, add a couple of red and green peppers and look forward to preparing your very own 'Garden Pizza'. For starters, pick up a pre-baked pie shell and a fresh mozzarella cheese. Slice and lightly saute red and green peppers, zucchini, and tomatoes in olive oil. Carefully layer the fresh vegetables in the prepared pie shell. Top with your favorite tomato sauce. Thinly slice fresh mozzarella cheese and together with basil leaves alternate as a topping. Bake in a 350 oven about 10 or 15 minutes...or until the crust turns golden brown.

"Little kids like to see fresh plants grow in little pots," said Arlene Fine of Morristown. My fresh basil is busy growing on my windowsill. "I snip the basil and add it to my sauce, or serve it with mozzarella cheese and tomato in a salad. I also enjoy preparing this most unusual, refreshing recipe," she adds. "It calls for fresh peaches, a vidalia onion, basil leaves, sugar, and balsamic vinegar. "

Into a medium size bowl, slice four ripe peaches then slice again. Slice and add a medium-size vidalia onion. Add a handful of chopped basil leaves, (about 4 or 5). Add 1 teaspoon sugar and balsamic vinegar to taste. Let sit for an hour or more. Serve with your favorite poultry recipe. Happy Growing Season!
